St. LuciaHello hello,last night I was in a Swedish church, attending the celebration of St. Lucia. This is something very specifically Swedish (or so we were told) and it is absolutely beautiful! After the priest has said his bit, explaining about the tradition of this day, the church became dark and then a procession of young women dressed in white came in (oh, and one guy, too). They all held candles in their hands, and the one in the front wore five candles on her head! They then sang several very nice Swedish Christmas-type songs, sometimes accompanied by a piano. The athmosphere there in the church was absolutely terrific, with wonderful music and light only coming from these candles...wow! Afterwards we had some Swedish fruit drink and small rolls baked with saffron, quite nice stuff...if you ever have a chance to attend such a celebration, go for it!!! The whole thing had been organized by Mari, with some good friends (including Eike and myself) attending, and after it had ended we went to her house for a few drinks. Later, -A. |
